San Francisco Peninsula Guide
November 14th, 2005
I myself am an intern in Palo Alto and had to go through all this “Where do I find a good …?”, “What can we do if we like to …?”, and so on. Therefore I wrote down all I needed in a HowToGetAlong, for example about the VisaProcess I went through, what I learned about finding Accomodations, manage my Finances & Expenses, all this stuff that was new to me over here and I think is interesting for others who plan to come here, as well.
Dangerous?
Hoo, isn’t that dangerous to let anybody who likes to mess with your text? Actually no. Since I can always reverse changes a malicious did, there is no need to worry about it. It’s not that I believe it will never happen, but such users will get bored pretty fast (think of the Broken Glass Theory) and only users with good-natured intensions will stick to this project.
Set up as a Wiki
Set up as a Wiki, this Guide is free to edit for everyone.
Ever heard of wikipedia? Sure you have. It’s an free encyclopedia that anyone can edit and the biggest wiki of all. How did it become that big? By millions of users willing to spend little of their time and help others. I do not hope to find millions of users, but if once in a while somebody who found out something interesting is willing to share it with others, I would be glad.
What YOU can do
Your part can range from really simple to fairly complex.
* Simple case: you read through one of these documents and find a typo .. correct it. It will take you only 15 seconds.
* Moderate case: you found a good location for hiking, a nice restaurant or a cheap airline .. add a new entry to an existing page.
* Fairly complex case: you know of a topic that is not covered yet .. become the creator of a new page and immortalize yourself in this wiki
A little HowTo
Editing or creating a wiki page is fairly simple. The easiest way to go is to use the GUI-editor. If you are faster typing text, open the text-editor. Information on how to create bold text, headings or tables can be found at the bottom. If you want to create a totally new page, just write a ‘JoinCapitalizedWords’ or border the name of the new page with [" and "]. For a more detailed information check out HelpOnEditing.
